HISTORY OF LABRADORITE

Labradorite is a mineral of the feldspar family. It takes its name from the Labrador region of Canada, where it was first discovered by European missionaries and explorers in the 18th century. Labradorite is also found in other parts of the world, including Scandinavia, Russia and Australia.

This variety of plagioclase feldspar is distinguished by its play of shimmering colors known as "labradorescence" (an optical phenomenon that creates metallic, color-changing reflections when light strikes the stone's surface). This is one of labradorite's most distinctive and prized characteristics.

Before it was recognized by mineral collectors and lapidaries, labradorite had long been used by the aboriginal peoples of Labrador and other regions to make tools, jewelry and ornaments. It also had spiritual and cultural significance within these communities.
