HISTORY OF LABRADORITE
Labradorite is a mineral of the feldspar family. It takes its name from the Labrador region of Canada, where it was first discovered by European missionaries and explorers in the 18th century. Labradorite is also found in other parts of the world, including Scandinavia, Russia and Australia.
This variety of plagioclase feldspar is distinguished by its play of shimmering colors known as "labradorescence" (an optical phenomenon that creates metallic, color-changing reflections when light strikes the stone's surface). This is one of labradorite's most distinctive and prized characteristics.
Before it was recognized by mineral collectors and lapidaries, labradorite had long been used by the aboriginal peoples of Labrador and other regions to make tools, jewelry and ornaments. It also had spiritual and cultural significance within these communities.
Over the past few decades, labradorite has become a popular gemstone in jewelry because of its unique labradorescence. Today, labradorite continues to captivate people around the world with its beauty.
VIRTUES AND SYMBOLISM
In addition to its physical beauty, labradorite is also valued for its esoteric symbolism. It is often associated with spiritual and energetic properties, such as protection, mental clarity, transformation and connection with higher dimensions. In esoteric circles, labradorite is sometimes referred to as a "transformation" or "moonstone" stone, due to its relationship with lunar cycles and its mysterious appearance.
In lithotherapy, labradorite is said to possess virtues thatprotect its wearers from negative influences and promote harmony.
Labradorite is also associated with shamanic and spiritual practices. In some cultures, it is considered a stone of vision, helping individuals to access heightened states of consciousness and explore spiritual realities.
